BIG 500 3 days of action packed Interhashing in Chiang Mai in 27-29 October 2006
run 495? August 28 The day dawned hot and sunny. Hashers ignored the dawn but sometime later arose, performed such morning ablutions as seemed necessary, donned hash kit and embarked in their trusty motor-steeds for the charming provençal village of Utelle. On his journey your scribe noted a pedo-mobile on the road and over took it briefly before attempting to head up the wrong side of the valley to Utelle. By the time I got sorted out the pedomobile was a mere cloud of dust in the distance so I was greatly surprised to encounter it again as I navigated the lacets on the final climb - it seems the pedomobile had been distracted by this and that (probably female, 38D) and missed his turn in St Jean. Anyway when we got there we were greeted with numerous hashers including a briefly returning Killadong. Unfortunately what was not in sight was a beer meister. It seems that conjugal anniversaries or other equally feeble excuses had delayed him, but fortunately before we all got too nervous he showed up and was followed Pete to the beer check. Given the altitude and the surrounding peaks it was clear that we would be either descending a lot first or ascending a lot first. The hares decided that up first was better so that was precisely what we did when we set off. Within about 5 minutes of running the beer meister managed to go arse over tit and thus rule himself out of running trails for the next N hashes due to a twisted ankle. Shortly aferwards there was a clear photo stop which both Killadong and I took advantage of.   Unfortunately this was by no means the end of the climb which went on for a ridiclous time with numerous checks to try and confuse us FRBs. The scenery was dramatic, mostly vertical, and decidedly pictureskew.  The relief which was expresed in sentences like "at least we aren't climbing THAT" was tempered with the fear that the word "YET" was missing from that sentence. Anyway after we'd ascended a lot and descended a bit and ascended a bit more we came across some relief in the form or deiciously ripe blackberries which we stopped to sample   Shortly afterwards we started ascending again and encoutered a hare. This gave us hope that the beer check might be close which is wasn't. Eventually we came across a road with a great view of a distant Utelle and no sign of beer, however some walkers were distinctly visible in the opposite direction ascending towards what appeared to be the "Madonna of Utelle". When we caught up with them we discovered that it was indeed the Madonne d'Utelle and we also discovered that the walked had been joined by a certain Too Cheeky - who had decided to do some autohashing.   The views were amazing and allowed Pedo to see where he works and for all of us to see pretty much all of No Satisfaction's trails for the past N years. After enough beer, chips and view we moved on knowing full well that the only option here was down, but that down was not necessarily enough of a hint. Eventually we figured it out and descended past ruins of farmhouses that brought new dimension to descriptions by estate agents of "secluded" or "quiet".   Shortly thereafter we stopped the precipitous descent and joined a GR for the run in - unfortunately for those of us who were a little tired of hills we still had some ascending to do before ending up in the village of Utelle and a distinct lack of flour. Fortunately there were occasional traces and hash forensics allowed us to find our way back to the cars. The circle thanked the hares for an outstanding run before naming hashers for the usal offences such as autohashing, showing up late, returning, visiting etc. and seemed to take on a rether Australian tinge. Killadong recieved many down downs for infractions and finally shared in the awarded hashit by proxy for Suckon and Maneater  On On and remember that pictures on this run can be seen at Dirty Dingus's hash picture pages |
